β€˜Hear & Beyond’ Launches in One Month!

LET’S CELEBRATE ONE MONTH UNTIL THE LAUNCH OF HEAR & BEYOND!

As many readers know, Gael Hannan and I have been working on a book about hearing loss. It’s been a two-year labor of love, and we are now almost at the finish line! Hear & Beyond: Live Skillfully with Hearing Loss will launch in just one month! This is the book we wish we’d had at the start of our hearing loss journeys. In it we have tried to create, as one of the book’s endorsers Rebecca Alexander says, β€œthe ultimate survival guide to living well with hearing loss.”

Through personal anecdotes, humor, and detailed discussion, Gael and I share the ways we have learned to live skillfully with hearing loss. We discuss the big picture of the hearing loss journey and the importance of a can-do attitude. We cover the technologies and non-technical tools that we use to communicate well. In the end, we tie it all together into Hearing Hacksβ€”tips and workaroundsβ€”for almost every occasion.

We hope you will recognize bits of yourself and your experiences in the book. And that it inspires you to live more skillfully with your own hearing challenges. Hear & Beyond launches in stores and online on May 3rd, but you can pre-order it now!

Why Should You Pre-Order β€˜Hear & Beyondβ€˜?

By pre-ordering, you’ll not only be one of the first people to read Hear & Beyond, but you’ll also receive an exclusive invitation to a captioned talkback with the authors scheduled for mid-May!

Here’s how to get your exclusive invitation:

  1. Pre-order one or more copies from your favorite retailer.Β Links to a variety of retailers are on our website.
  2. Email your receipt toΒ meetshariandgael@gmail.com.
  3. Check your email for a Zoom link to register for the captioned event. (You may need to check your spam folder.)
  4. Click Register, mark the date, and we’ll see you there!

Pre-ordering will also helpΒ Hear & Beyond’s Amazon rankings, which will make the book easier to find for other people with hearing loss who may benefit from it.

Why Write a Book about Hearing Loss?

When I began my hearing loss journey, there was so much I didn’t understand. I didn’t know anyone else my age with hearing loss so I often felt alone and unprepared. With no idea what to expect, I didn’t know how to ask for the assistance I needed to communicate better or even what to ask for!

For years I battled stigmaΒ and embarrassment as I struggled to adapt to the changes that came with this new life. My internal attitudes about hearing loss prevented me from taking steps to improve my life like admitting to others that I had trouble hearing. There was no guide telling me how to take back control of my communication, and of my life.

Gael felt the same way. So we decided to write the book we wished we’d had along the way. We hope you will find it as much fun to read as it was for us to write!

  1. Susan Berger – Blogging is one big experiment for me. Will it work? Who knows. I'll link websites that have published my essays and maybe I'll write original posts. My topics will be observations, points of view and life as I see it. I'm still marinating...
    Susan Berger says:

    Congrats! Huge milestone!

    1. Shari Eberts – NYC – Shari Eberts is a passionate hearing health advocate and internationally recognized author and speaker on hearing loss issues. She is the founder of Living with Hearing Loss, a popular blog and online community for people with hearing loss, and an executive producer of "We Hear You," an award-winning documentary about the hearing loss experience. Her book, "Hear & Beyond: Live Skillfully with Hearing Loss," (co-authored with Gael Hannan) is the ultimate survival guide to living well with hearing loss. Shari has an adult-onset genetic hearing loss and hopes that by sharing her story, she will help others to live more peacefully with their own hearing issues.

Yes, thanks. Fingers crossed this type of research will continue to advance.

  3. A great big THANK YOU for this welcome addition to the literature on overcoming the challenges of hearing loss. As a kindred spirit in the cause of greater public enlightenment about our disability, I hope that you, Gael and your publisher will do everything possible to encourage readership among the large majority of those with hearing loss who live in denial of their condition or simply refuse to seek hearing healthcare. I fear that preaching to the choir, while entertaining and informative, won’t move the needle very much.

That is the goal! Please help by sharing the information far and wide. Thank you for the work that you do.
