Hearing Aids are Cool!

There has been much written about the stigma of hearing loss and hearing aids. But as one reader commented on a recent blog post on this topic, perhaps it’s time to flip the conversation. Rather than focusing on the stigma and the pushback, let’s highlight all the cool and life-changing benefits that hearing aids can provide.

Great idea!

Below are my top reasons why hearing aids are cool. Please add yours in the comments!

Seven Reasons Hearing Aids are Cool

Hearing aid wearers already understand the many benefits that we derive from our devices, but the general population may not understand them. Share this post with the uninitiated. They may be surprised by all the cool benefits that modern hearing devices have to offer.

  1. Use them like Airpods to take phone calls or stream audio content directly to your hearing devices, keeping distracting background noise at bay and personalizing the sound for your hearing profile.
  2. Connect directly to public address systems and venue sound systems via telecoil to enhance hearing in public spaces. This will become even easier (and more widespread) once Auracast is fully operational.
  3. Enjoy better conversations with loved ones because speech is easier to understand. Try out various programs that enhance sound in a variety of settings like noisy restaurants and when listening to music. It won’t be perfect, but it will be better, and when you use other tools too, conversation is easier.
  4. Increase independence and confidence when traveling, enjoying the outdoors or simply running errands because you are more attuned to the sounds in your environment.
  5. Customize the soundscape with volume control. Or remove the devices for an instant respite from noisy situations.
  6. Reawaken sounds you may have been missing for quite some time like birds chirping or the sound of the ocean. Others, like the hum of the refrigerator or sirens, may be less pleasurable, but enhance safety and boost awareness of your surroundings.
  7. Help minimize tinnitus since you are hearing more ambient sound. Some hearing aids also provide special programming to ease tinnitus.

Wonderful! It is much easier to regulate our volume when we can hear our own voice. Thank you for sharing your experiences with hearing aids.

  1. I was in a store paying for groceries. The 20 something clerk pointed to my mini-mic and asked what it was? I explained and his response, “That is so cool, I can’t wait to get old!” I explained that lots of folks his age used hearing assistive devices from HAs to CIs. Fun interaction!

  2. Love this article! Using my mini-mic in conjunction with my hearing aids, I’m able to:

    1. Watch TV at a normal volume so those around me aren’t disturbed.
    2. Take a tour at a museum and ask the docent to clip on the mic so I can hear directly what they are saying.
    3. Give the mic to a friend so I can hear them better in a noisy environment.
    4. Place the mic in another room and overhear conversations — oops, I wasn’t supposed to reveal that! 🙂
